Project – The hubs
ReBioCycle hubs work at a demonstrative scale and in the real operational environment for the effective and efficient sorting and recycling of three types of #ioplastics: PLA, PHA and Composites. The hubs will demonstrate a higher impact of obtaining the same or superior-grade recycled polymers and other higher-value applications.
The hubs utilize different technologies and technology readiness levels (TRL) and are located in different countries.
Dutch HUB
Hub leader: Jan Pels, TORWASH
📍Netherlands
The Dutch hub will use chemical technology, upscaling it to TRL 6.
- Input: Sorting of mixed plastics (e.g., PLA and PHA)
- Process: Chemical Recycling using TORWASH technology
- Outputs Available: rPLA and PBM to make PHBV
Spanish + Irish HUB
Hub leader: Pablo Ferrero Aguar, AIMPLAS
📍Spain and Ireland
The Spanish hub will use biological and mechanical recycling technologies, upscaling them to TRL 6-7
- Input: Sorting of mixed plastics from municipal solid waste
- Processes: Enzymatic (microbial) and mechanical recycling
- Outputs Available: rPHA and rPLA
Italian HUB
Hub leader: Orsola Bolognani, NOVAMONT
📍Italy
The Italian hub will use chemical technology upscaling to TRL 7
- Input: Composites, i.e. mixed bio-based biodegradable plastics including blends of different biopolymers, from municipal source, separated plastic waste with 1% bioplastics
- Processes: Chemical Recycling
- Outputs Available: rComposites with a 15% recycled content. Blends with rPHA received from the Dutch and Spanish Hub
